On Sunday June 6th workers of the American Red Cross, NEPA Region represented by Communication Workers of America (CWA) Local 13500 met at the American Legion Post 815 to discuss the lack of progress in contract negotiations. The current contract expired May 31, 2010 but has been extended to June 7th.

Issues outstanding are wages with the Red Cross insisting on a wage freeze, increased health care contributions and many working condition issues.

The members voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike if necessary.

"These members are angry at the NEPA Region, Red Cross" said CWA Chief Negotiator, Jim Byrne. "They have given concessions in the past to help out the Red Cross, now they are saying enough! The Red Cross is trying to exploit their workers by using the economy as an excuse to take from them yet again."

Negotiations continue and no strike deadline has been set. CWA has committed to providing ten (10) days notice before any work stoppage to insure no disruption of the blood supply.
