Featured Statement: Strengthening Our Union

CWA District 2-13 Vice President Michael Davis issued the following statement on Saturday, February 22, 2025:

Dear CWA Leaders and Members,

In the midst of the ongoing political turmoil, it’s vital that we return to the core principles that unite us. As Vice President of the Communication Workers of America District 2-13, I urge you to reflect on the true meaning of solidarity. This isn’t just a catchphrase; it’s the driving force behind our actions as union members. While it’s essential to support our fellow workers and unions in their battles, we must prioritize the well-being of our own members and CWA staff.

Consider this: during a crisis—be it a labor dispute, workplace safety concern, or economic instability—CWA AFA flight attendants recommend that passengers secure their own oxygen masks before helping others. This analogy speaks volumes about our responsibilities as leaders and union members. We must first ensure the health and stability of our union before reaching out to lend a hand to others.

Supporting our fellow unions and workers is an admirable pursuit, and I firmly believe in the power of collective action. When we stand together, we amplify our voices and enhance our bargaining power. However, we cannot afford to overlook our own needs in the process. Our primary obligation is to advocate for our members and safeguard their rights and livelihoods.

By focusing on strengthening our own union, we lay the groundwork for extending our support to others. Empowered members create a resilient union, allowing us to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies in the labor movement. This is the true essence of solidarity: a reciprocal exchange of support where each group lifts the other without compromising its core values.

As we face the challenges ahead, let’s remember that our true strength lies in our unity. We must continue to fight for fair wages, improved working conditions, and respect for all workers, all while ensuring that we protect our own membership first. We cannot be effective allies if we are not strong and secure within our own ranks.

I encourage each of you to engage with your fellow members, share your insights, and collaborate on strategies to support one another while staying steadfast in our commitment to our union. Together, we can forge a future where our members not only survive but thrive, and in doing so, we contribute to the broader labor movement.

Let’s secure our own oxygen masks first, so we can elevate others in their times of need. Together, we can forge a powerful network of support that not only strengthens our union but also uplifts all workers striving for dignity and respect in their workplaces.

In solidarity,
Mike Davis
